Metronidazole

Metronidazole is marketed as Flagyl and is chemically 1-(2-hydroxyethyl)-2-methyl-5-nitroimidazole. It selectively kills anaerobic cells. The only other approved drug for treatment of trichiomoniasis is tinidazole; a strain resistant to one drug is oft resistant to the other. In Trichomonas vaginalis it is activated in the hydrogenosome by ferredoxin; in Entamoeba hystolytica and Giardia lamblia it is activated in the cytosol by other proteins.
