Lombards

Italy was devastated by the wars of the short-lived Byzantine reconquest after 553 and the Lombards invaded from western Hungary in 568. Initially they settled in family groups near decayed towns of northern Italy. After the seventh century, cities grew up once more and culture revived. At first Lombard women wore Germanic types of brooch, but adopted native Italian disc brooches and Mediterranean belt-sets, rings and earrings as the two populations became more integrated. In 774 the Lombards in north Italy were conquered by the armies of the Frankish king Charlemagne (742-814)
