Mousterian Industry

The Mousterian industry of the general type found at Spilik and Babkhal was first encountered in this region at the cave of Hazar Merd (Garrod, 1930); knowledge of it has recently been extended by Solecki (1955 and 1957), in level D of the Shanidar cave, where neandertaloid skeletons also were found. Braidwood and Howe 1960, p 30

More refined instances of Mousterian tools have been found at Hazar Merd and other caves. However, coarser instances were found at open air sites like Telegraph Pole 26/22 near Chemchemal, Serandur, and gravels near Kirkuk.
