John Jay

John Jay (1745 - 1829) was elected by New York to the Continental Congress. Congress appointed Jay as America's secretary of foreign affairs. President George Washington chose Jay to be the first chief justice of the United States. Jay helped negotiate the treaty ending the Revolution. He later resigned from Supreme Court to become governor of New York.
